anak Langkau (ARTM-RRD) bersara Pegawai Waren I (1986), 2010- menerima anugerah
gelaran 'Datuk Temenggong' dari TYT YDP Negeri Sarawak, meninggal dunia 2013)
901738 Warrant Officer 1 Kanang anak Langkau. Kanang anak
Langkau of Simanggang, Sarawak was a Malaysian Ranger from the 8th Battalion
Royal Rangers (now known as the 8th Paras) who was awarded the "Seri
Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa" whilst still alive and a 'Pingat Gagah Berani
(PGB)' He is the first and only person
thus far to have received two gallantry awards in the Malaysian Armed Forces.
He was born on 2 March 1945 at Kerangan Manuk, Nanga
Meluan, Kanowit, Sarawak and joined the service with the Sarawak Rangers as an
Iban Tracker on the 21 April 1962. He was absorbed into the Malaysian Rangers
when Malaysia was proclaimed on the 16 Sep 1963. He left the service after 21 years of service
as a WO1.
Following the death of one soldier in the Tanah Hitam,
Perak in enagagement with communist on the 8th February 1980 the Unit Combat
Intelligence Platoon of 8th Battalion RRR under the leadership of Kanang was tasked to seek and destroy the
group. They tracked the enemy over 11 days on terrain familiar to the enemy. On
the evening 19 Feb 1980 at around 1500H his platoon managed to estimate the
location of the enemy, who was close by.
Unfortunately, Kanang's group was mistaken as they were
already within the enemy's perimeter, which they realised when they found a
communications cord connecting the sentry outpost to the main force. The cord
was usually connected to a bush or empty cans so that a sentry could use it to
alert the main force of intruders.
Kanang, 8 metres from the enemy sentry position, launched
an attack to his right flank. It then became apparent that the main force lay
to the left. They assaulted the left and routed the enemy taking one casualty
and killing five communists. One soldier was seriously wounded and Kanang
himself took three rounds but survived and eventually returned to active duty.
Kanang anak Langkau was conferred the "Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa
(SP)" for valour in decimating the enemy on 3 June 1981. Prior to this he was honoured with PGB in
1980 for another excellent fighting spirit over the terrorist in Ops Gerak
Setia in 1979.
Kanang, who retired on 30 Mei 1986 carries title 'Temenggung'
is bestowed with 'Darjah Panglima Gemilang Bintang Kenyalang (PGBK) by the TYT
Yang DiPertua Negeri Sarawak on 23 Sep 2011 and entitled him to carry the title

TAHUN 1982
1. Allahyarham
Kapten Zainal Abidin bin Abdul Rashid (dinaikkan ke pangkat Mejar)
Mejar Zanal Abidin bin Abd Rashid.
mereka tinggalkan demi tugas.
Tembak-menembak berlaku selama hampir 45 minit sebelum
musuh akhirnya melarikan diri.
2x pesawat Nuri. Jenazah Kapten Zainal telah disemadikan di kampung
kelahirannya – Kampung Matang Kerian, Pantai Remis, Perak.

Allahyarham LKpl Saimon Tarikat SP
Dato' Dr Paul Kiong
At 3am yesterday, awake and in anticipation of the sahur meal,
I read a post from a friend on Facebook which had a photo of some of our
officers and men around a 105mm pack howitzer in an unspecified gun position.
I believe it to be in Sabah and that it was during the days
of the Indonesian Confrontation. But the photo's caption read "the Battle
of Kalabakan 30 October 1966" which is way off mark if he was referring to
the Indonesian attack on the 3RMR position in Kalabakan which killed eight and
injured 19 of the unit's personnel. That battle or attack occurred on Dec 29,
1963.
Such are the inaccuracies circulating on the Net, from
where my friend had obtained the photo which, not unlike many other sources,
does not help to give an accurate account of our warriors' contributions and
sacrifices in defence of the country. But Paul Kiong, a retired Special Branch
police officer, was certainly more positive and accurate about his numerous
exploits during the fight against the communist terrorists (CTs) in the early
1980s.
Meeting him again yesterday at the Warriors Day parade
enabled me to know more about one operation executed in the second week of
April 1981, when the SB silently and successfully captured 13 CTs, including an
important leader, Cheong Kuen (CK), at the Stone Coffin camp deep in the Ulu
Kinta forest reserve. Not surprisingly, it was well planned. It involved
specially picked SB operatives and the Special Operations Volunteer Force
(SOVF) which was made up of captured and already "turned over" former
CTs.
Members of this small team of SOVF docked up with the
unsuspecting CK and in fact lured him into the Stone Coffin camp a few days
before the SB raiding party moved in. The move was in pitch black darkness and
pouring rain up steep slopes leading to the camp's perimeter. Just after
midnight and on a signal, the SB raiding teams crawled in. Kiong led the first
of the three- men teams to capture the sleeping CK. He and the other team
leaders were the only ones armed - with a pistol each. As they were crawling
in, one of Kiong's team members inadvertently kicked a drinking mug left on the
ground. The loud noise woke up a female CT who called out loudly, "Who is
there?" three times.
Everyone froze and prayed that she would not get up to
investigate. Kiong's heart thumped so loudly that he felt that the CT might
have even heard it.
He was fearful as the female CT was known to be a ruthless
combatant. However, after some minutes everything became deathly quiet. Kiong's
verbatim narration may describe the subsequent events better.
"I then lifted my head and tried to peep into the
darkness to assess the situation.
"Without seeing or hearing anything that would spell
danger, I continued crawling and on half-crouch moved towards my target, that
is CK. With our training and a swipe of a small torchlight emitting a thin beam
under the hammocks of our respective targets we could make out where the head
and leg was.
"We then launched the attack by overturning the CTs'
hammocks and pinning them to the ground. Within 10 seconds, all the hostile CTs
of CK's group of 13 were subdued and handcuffed."
Without a doubt, this was a fantastic operation, not unlike
what could be done by the fictitious Hollywood Mission Impossible team. I would
say it could not have got any more daring and spectacular and without a shot
being fired.
Kiong certainly deserved the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa
(SP) awarded to him in June 1983 and a Datukship awarded by the king recently.
The nation actually has many heroic persons like him
belonging to that period of time. But for various reasons, they have not been
made visible earlier. Maybe now is the time for the wraps around these people
to be taken away so that the rakyat can know of their feats and sacrifices in
order to make this country secure.
Inspektor Sia Boon Chee (1983). Sia BC was an Inspector in
Police SB in Ipoh and was part of the same operations to fight the communist
threat. These operations required him to gather intelligence by infiltrating
enemy lines, operating in thick jungle, capturing terrorists alive and engaging
them in direct battle. He was awarded the SP on June 1, 1983. He retired with
the rank of DSP in 1994. He read law the following year and is currently a
practicing lawyer.

The case received wide coverage as the names of several

Lt Lee Ah Pow, who commanded a troop of Scout Cars from C

the 12th September 1962 played an admirable part and showed exemplary courage
when the patrol was surrounded by about 100 armed KATANGESE GENDARMERIE on MARTINI TRACK JUNCTION,
ELIZABETHVILLE.
With a high degree of restraint and presence of mind Lt Lee
Ah Pow deployed his troop in a position of all round defense to take on the
Enemy should they open fire, and thus provided a screen around 2nd/5th GURKHA

quality of leadership he controlled his men from opening fire until the enemy
opened fire first on the patrol. Only then under a most difficult situation
knowing of the UN PEACEFUL AIM, he ordered his troops to open fire with short
bursts, in which they did and killing only two Gendarmes and wounding one. The
Enemy then dispersed leaving behind boxes of ammunition, side arms, greatcoats
and equipment. For gallantry and the correct execution of orders and a high
degree of discipline displayed in the face of the enemy Lt Lee Ah Pow has set a glowing example of leadership

1 Jan 2009, A Malaysian military helicopter saved an Indian tanker from being hijacked on Thursday, foiling the new year’s first attack by pirates in the dangerous Gulf of Aden off the chaotic African nation of Somalia.
“This was a New Year’s gift to the owners of the Indian tankers. If the Malaysians had not arrived their ship would have been certainly hijacked," said Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy reporting centre.
The Malaysian rescue comes as more and more countries are sending warships to join a multi-national naval force to protect commercial vessels passing through one of the world’s most important sea routes. On Christmas Day, a German helicopter similarly saved an Egyptian ship off Somalia, a lawless country that has become a breeding ground for pirates who have raked in millions of dollars in ransom from hijackings.
The Indian tanker carrying a full load of oil was steaming toward the Suez Canal when it was attacked by two skiffs, one of which carried seven pirates dressed in military-style uniforms, said Choong.
“They came close to the ship and started firing machine guns, hitting the bridge and the accommodation area," Choong told The Associated Press.
He said the pirates, believed to be Somalis, tried to board the vessel several times while “firing repeatedly" but failed.
The captain increased the ship’s speed to maximum, made evasive maneuvers and sent an SOS, which was received by a Malaysian frigate, KD Sri Indera Sakti, only 15 nautical miles away, he said.
The frigate dispatched a Fennec light military helicopter, which arrived within minutes, said Choong.
On spotting the helicopter the pirates stopped firing and fled. There were no injuries to the crew but the tanker sustained some damage, Choong said.
Cmdr. Jane Campbell, a spokeswoman for the 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said the U.S. Navy had no immediate information about a pirate attack.
The Malaysians, who are part of the multi-national task force, also saved a Chinese ship less than two weeks ago.
More than a dozen warships are now patrolling the vast gulf. Countries as diverse as Britain, India, Iran, the United States, China, France and Germany have naval forces in the waters.
According to the International Maritime Bureau, pirates attacked 111 times in the Gulf of Aden in 2008, out of which 42 resulted in successful hijackings.
Choong said 14 ships are still in the hands of pirates with more than 240 hostages. “Despite the increase in naval activities pirates are still managing to find loopholes to attack and hijack ships because warships cannot be everywhere at the same time," said Choong.
The pirates have been given a free hand to operate because of more than a decade of turmoil in Somalia. The nation of about 8 million people has not had a functioning government since warlords overthrew a dictator in 1991 and then turned on each other.

8th Battalion Royal
Malaysian Rangers – he was the only recipient of both Seri Pahlawan Gagah
Perkasa and Pingat Gagah Berani. Following the death of a soldier in the
Tanah Hitam area of Perak in an engagement with communists on 8 February
1980, the Unit Combat Intelligence Squad (UCIS) of 8th Battalion Royal
Rangers under the leadership of Sergeant Kanang anak Langkau was tasked to
seek and destroy the group. They tracked the enemy over difficult terrain for
11 days. On 19 February 1980, at around 1500 hours, his platoon managed to
estimate the location of the enemy, who were close by. Kanang's group was
mistaken as they were already within the enemy's perimeter, which they
realised when they found a communications cord connecting the sentry outpost
to the main force. Kanang, 8 metres from the enemy sentry position, launched
an attack to his right flank. It then became apparent that the main force lay
to the left. They assaulted the left and routed the enemy taking one casualty
and killing five communists. One soldier was seriously wounded and Kanang
himself took three rounds but survived and eventually returned to active duty
retiring as a Warrant Officer 1. Kanang anak Langkau was conferred the
"Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa" for valour in decimating the enemy on
3 June 1981.

|
1986
|
On the 10th day of
their mission Captain: Narendran Indi Shanmugam and his squad of Ten Rangers were ambushed by a
communist terrorist group that outnumbered them 40 to 10 personnel. They
walked into the ambush as a 30 caliber machine gun opened fire on their
position. Capt. Indi and his men formed a two line retreat wall to fall back
alternating suppression fire until the unit would be out of range of the enemy's
line of fire. During this man oeuvre the unit lost 2 men KIA, instantly and
one more injured as Alpha team ARC1 came under murderous fire. Capt Indi had
to face a wall of bullets to go back for his injured man. Carrying his
injured man over his shoulder and commenced to run back to safety but a stray
bullet found its mark punching through the injured Corporal and piercing
Capt. Indi in the middle of his back. Despite this near fatal injury Captain
Narendran Shanmugam rallied his remaining 7 Rangers of Alpha team ARC1 and
flanked the 40 communist insurgents, successfully eliminating the entire
enemy outfit and securing the IED's that was intended to destroy an allied
air force base in an undisclosed location which would have resulted in heavy
allied losses. Captain Narendran Indi Shanmugam's actions was awarded the medal of The Gallant
