PORT DICKSON

TOHARUDIN BIN ABDUL RASHID
Bondaku bernama Umikelsom
binti Hj Mustapa bin Pajoyo dan ayahandaku bernama Hj Abd Rashid bin Hj Tahir
(Isa) bin Ibrahim. Nendaku sebelah ayah bernama Manisah bt Shafie manakala
nenda sebelah ibu bernama Suminah bt Hassan @ Kasan.
didirikan mengadap jalan kampung. Setelah kelahiranku lahir lagi empat
tentang kerjaya masa depan.
Aku masuk Sekolah Menengah Tunku Mahmood Iskandar (STMI),
sangat muda, iaitu 18 tahun- semasa menunggu keputusan SPM. Dia dinikahkan dengan orang sekampungku
bernama Hamzah bin Hj Yusof, seorang guru agama (meninggal dunia 2006). Manakala abang sulungku, Md Jahrom (23 tahun)
- iaitu Sekolah Alam Shah (SAS), Cheras KL. Inilah kali pertama aku merasa
8. Inilah kegagalan besar pertama dalam hidupku.
TJP Intake 37 Sebatang Karah 1980
Komandan TUDM Kluang. Pemakaian pangkat disempurnakan oleh Pemangku Komandan,
Mej (U) Abdul Razak Abdul Aziz (bersara Mej Jen TUDM pada tahun 2005) dan
ditumpangkan ke Cawang Logistik, ditumpangkan ke Cawang Bekalan.
Selepas mengikuti kursus pendek (sebulan) Modul Pergerakan
melalui 'cinta pandang pertama'.
Aku mengikuti Kursus Asas Pengurusan Pegawai Logistik Siri
Sebaik sahaja menamatkan kursus asas Logistik, aku melangsungkan perkahwinan
Kantonmen selama 3 bulan. Bulan Ogos 1984, ditumpangkan ke Pulatibang 3 sebagai
Ketua Flt Logistik. Lt Kol Aziz Iskandar (my Commandant).

Man robbuka?
Ma dinuka?
Man nabiyuka?
Wa imamuka?
Man ikhwatuka?
MENGAPA
AKU PILIH KERJAYA TENTERA?
1.
Memilih untuk menceburkan bidang ketenteraan bukan satu
keputusan yang mudah dalam diri seseorang. Ini kerana dunia ketenteraan
memerlukan kita mengorbankan sebahagian dari kebebasan menjalani kehidupan
seharian.
5. Beberapa bulan membantu kedua orang tua menjalani kehidupan kampung seperti sebelum aku mendapat keputusan SPM tahun 1977. Menoreh getah, memetik buah kelapa sawit, menebas, memetik kopi dan lain-lain kerja kampong yang lazim.
memberitahu sesiapa ahl keluargaku. Apabila telah menerima surat tawaran untuk
menghadiri temuduga barulah aku memberitahu kedua orang tuaku. Mereka diam
10. Aku menerima surat panggilan (dari Jabatanarah Tenaga Kerja 'C'- MINDEF) untuk menghadiri temuduga di Kem Majidee, Johor Bahru melalui surat: KP/JAWAT/TK(C)/2147/1 bertarikh 4 Dis 1979.
Kem Majidee, Johor Bahru
15 hingga 18 Jan 1980 (Rujukan surat: KP/JAWAT/ TK(C)/2147/1 dated 9 Jan
1980 yang ditandatangani oleh Kapt Ramli bin Omar).
Kluang. Bapak tak ikut hantar. Selepas bersalam dan mencium tangan emak aku tak
mampu lagi untuk merenung wajahnya. Aku tahan air mata. Selepas keretapi
bergerak, barulah airmataku jatuh berderai. Aku sedang menuju ke dunia baru
yang asing bagiku. Entah pulang lagi entah tidak. BUT No Turning Back. Aku
16. Dalam
keretapi aku bertemu semula dengan calon PK Kamarulzaman Wagiman and
Lukman Abd Rahman (kedua-duanya sama menghadiri temuduga di JB). Aku juga
berjumpa dengan calon PK Wanita Yohanez and Marmilah untuk kali
pertama. Mereka berdua menaiki keretapi dari Stesen Segamat.
17. Kami
18. Aku
memulakan 'the hell of military life' dan dikenali sebagai Pegawai Kadet
Tauliah Jangka Pendek Panggilan ke 37 (TJP 37) atau Short Commissioned
Officers Cadet Intake 37 (SSC 37) di Sekolah Pegawai Kadet (SPK), Kem
Sebatang Kara, Port Dickson. Untuk maklumat, latihan bagi Pegawai Kadet Tauliah
Tetap (regular intake) dijalankan sepenuhnya di Cawangan Kadet,
Maktab Tentera Diraja atau RMC, Kem Sg Besi. Semasa aku melaporkan diri,
Familiarisation and Orientation
19.
The first 3 days in Seginting Camp we were doing the
administrative works. The real military life was not come yet. We were issued
with set of training apparels:
2
pairs of PD Green (for drills)
a
pair of drill boot
2
pairsof PT kits- blue shorts and green T-shirts. (we called it PT Bodoh)
2
pairs of combat celoreng.
2
pairs of grey socks.
2
pairs of black socks
complete
hoversacks.
green
belt
a
pair of pouches.
a
pair of jungle boots.
2
pairs of drawers green (seluar dalam hijau laaa).
sport
shoes (white color- but later we were instructed to 'kiwi; it to black!)
complete
mess tins and mug etc.
20. Hair cutting was the first sign of 'uniformity'. More than 5 barbers were assigned to 'tebas' our hairs. But easy job, no haircut fashion demand from the customers. They just set their electrical haircutters to the minimum, start from the back neck and push to the forehead. Less than ten moves, the next turn will be ready to take the seat. Tears looking at our bundle of hair dropped onto the floor. Gonjeng!
21. The next day will be our 'D day - Taking an Oath - signing Sumpah Setia Angkatan Tentera (or well known as 'Cap Jari Sepuluh') and orientation day- supposed to be the program where all the cadets will be shown to various location and site of training. The whole day, all the cadet were excitedly preparing themselves such as signing their drill boots, and ironing the uniforms.
22.
Third day. That morning we were directed to gather inside the
hall. Wearing PD Green with drill boots. Every body was given a last chance (3
time offer) if any body willing to withdraw before the 'sumpah perwira' taking
place. After taking an oath...and printed our 10 fingers.... our life as a
soldier began. First we were introduced with a line PTIs.
23. The 'salam perkenalan 'to the Seginting Camp stated with running around the accomodation blocks. Not only running, we had to duck walk and frog jump. Those who late response will be kick at the back or buttock. All the cadets were forced to run and climb up the hillside and then ordered to slide roll downhill. So, just imagine, cadets were hitting, kicking and overolling each other. Everybody wanna finish the order fast and 'survival'. Many of us were injured/wounded, mostly caused by rock/stone edge (at the hillside) and the iron 'horse shoe'.
24. Some of us were trying to help their injured friends but were kicked by the PTIs.
25. From Kem Segenting, we were ushered (kena hayak) to Kem Sebatang Karah and another torturing field near to the obstacle course. Almost all were 'muntah hijau' means everything poured out until nothing left inside the stomach. I myself was pissed off inside my clothes during the torture session and end up dried by itself. Just imagine, how long was the introduction programme.
26. The result of the day, two cadets (Shaharudin and Chin) were died due to serious injuries and over exhaustion, and many more suffered serious injuries but survived. Some of them were admitted in the hospital for more than 3 weeks.
27. That night, everybody had their own nighmare- voice of tearing, crying and raving can be heard all over the accomodation barracks. One of my friends said, one of them had went up to 'psycho' level, taking off his clothes. Almost ALL were sound SO REGRET for joining the cadet training. Me too. I lost all my words -became DUMBO - just laid down on my bed, looking at the roof (no ceiling), stupidly asking my soul,
"Toha, have it. This to pay your stupidity for not working hard in your study. You have 1st Grade in your SPM, you had been given the best in your life, have a route to become an architect (to study in UTM), you wasted the opportunity, you have hundred of options but why you came here become a military cadets?"
My soul answered
"You are too late, do not look back, move forward. Orang kampung semua dah tau, kau hanya akan balik dengan pangkat Leftenen Muda! kalau kau lari balik, kau tak malu ke??"
Yes, from that moment, I never think of giving up from the training.
28. For about a week, our body muscle became tense and stiffen (especiall at the joints). Could not sit and squat straight- especially when you wanted to 'berak'.
Hereby I scatched the flow of movement of the orientation parade. It was started at Block M (place of taking oath)- Point J was the place where the cadets were instructed to climb the hillside (up to the fiend) and slide roll down. The torturing session ended at the obstacle course at Kem Sebatang Karah (Point Q). Then all the cadet were asked to run back to their respective block at Kem Seginting. The total distance may be more than 6 km
29.
The consequence of the incident (orientation program), the Board
of Inquiry (BOI) was convinced. At that time I do not understand what the
HELL is BOI all about. What I could remember, all the PTIs involved in
the orientation were lined up and all the cadets were instructed to walk
infront of them to recognise the suspects.
Oh fuck man! Do you think we can remember their faces? For us, at that time, all PTIs were fierce and cruel. Tendency to
point the wrong person was there.
30. What we heard later was, one or two PTIs were suspended from their duty (not fired). The name was SSgt Mxzxrxn (No!. I will not reveal his name- I think all of my intake still remember him).
31. At that time (1980s) where many of our soldiers were killed by the bandit in the jungle operations. So who cares? This is military training- that was the risk you have to face. If the incident happend today, I believed it will come out as Head Line.
Kasturi Battalion
32.
Initially, after the registration day, the whole intake of cadets
(about 275) were put in one
'Cadet Batallion' located in Kem Segenting, Port Dickson. The main reason was,
at that time or seniors (Intake 36) which supposed to be commissioned in
January/Feb 1980 was extended another 3 months (due to the failure of the OCS administration to make their uniform for the the passing out parade ready on time). Pity them. They occupied the dedicated SPK Camp in Kem Sebatang Karah.
Their commissioning parade was postponed to May 1980. The Camp now is
developed as an Army College campus (I had the opportunity to visit the
construction during my 3-day workshop at PLPM from 5-7 Jan 2011)
33.
After the TJP36 being commissioned, TJP37 was divided into 3
battalions, Tuah battalion moved up to Kem Sebatang Karah and Jebat and Kasturi
Battalion occupied in Kem Seginting. The identity of the Battalion was
differentiated by the colour of the Appaulette. Red for Tuah, Yellow for
Jebat and Green for Kasturi.
TJP37 Kasturi Battalion
Note: The photo was taken on the parade square. If you can see the white stair case (photo background). There are 64 stairs from the ground level (parade square) to reach the football field up there. During the orientation day (led by the PTI), all the cadets were forced to run climb the hillside and slide roll down. Two cadets (Shaharudin and Chong were died due to serious injuries) and many more suffered serious injuries but survived.

35.
There were 22 ladies cadet in TJP37. They were first TJP ladies
intake in the Armed Forces history. Prior to this all the ladies officers in
the Armed Forces were absorbed from the Territorial Army or Voluntarily
Service. Their barrack located at Kem Sebatang Karah (near to Tuah Battalion).
36.
Initially the other battalion felt jealous because we were far
away from the 'bunga'. However, later we changed our mind due to many reasons;
some of them were; SAKIT HATI coz the ladies cadets were given previlages in
front of the men counterparts, the men were punished or bullied by the instructors
in front of the ladies.
37.
The date of commissioning for TJP 37 was 24 January 1981. For
those who were selected for overseas cadet training (Sandhurst and
Portsea) they only be commissioned upon completion of their respective training course.
And, the Air Force cadets (in SPK) were divided into two categories. First, those who confirmed to serve as a ground officer (such as Engineering,
Supply, Admin, Air Defence and Air Traffic Control) joined their army comrades in SPK. Second, for all the
pilot candidates (those who went through and passed their Aircrew Medical
examination in IAM prior to their reporting to SPK) will only be commissioned
after receiving their flying wings (or date of they being chopped from flying).
However OUR seniority will be standardised on 24 January 1981. Means, those who commissioned after 24 Jan 1981, their seniority will be backdated to 24 January 1981.
38. In the first week of January 1981, we (the flying candidates) were transported to Alor Setar Air Base for our basic flying training. A 3 tonner from PD to Seremban and continued by train. Throughout the journey, we were accompanied by SSgt Rahman (Setap Rimau) and finally handed over to the Flying School staff.

40. Then, our life as a 'Flight Cadet' began. For this, please read the specific topic in later page.
41. The
peak or the grand day of every single cadet officer is the 'Commissioning
Day'. It was a long waiting day. Nine month training from the
reporting day of 2 Apr 1980 was really a longest day in our life. It
was much more longer than getting through our 11 years schooling day from
Standard One till Form Five.
42.
Unfortunately, I unable to write this historic moment of TJP37. I missed
that moment. All the Air Force Flight Cadets became the victim of "New Air
Force Policy".
43. Prior
to this TJP37, all the Air Force cadets regardless of their branch were
commissioned together with their comrades from the Army. They reported to
Flying School with their rank of Leftenan Muda (Udara). Whose brilliant
idea had changed the policy? The new policy said that all the air
force cadets have to complete their flying training -get their wings, before
qualified for 2nd Lt rank (commissioned). Worse enough, the news were delivered
when we (air orce cadets) were already in the rehearsal for the commissioning
parade for about a week.
45. We
were the first victims of the stupid policy.
46. Also
joining us for the reahearsal (for commissioning parade) were the Naval Cadet
Intake 22 from KD Pelandok, TLDM Lumut. They went through their 2 year training
as Officer Cadets and Midshipman.
47. So,
we (the flight cadets) left SPK wistfully and tearfully at the time our
comrades busying with their reahearsal for Commissioning Parade on 24 Jan
1981. Good luck squads. Alas.
UNSUCCESSFUL MISSION
The Life of Flight Cadet
48.
The Air Force Cadets in SPK were divided into 2 groups. The
non-flying cadets will be commissioned with their army intake on 24 Jan 1981.
Those who were selected for flying have to proceed for their flying training in
RMAF Alor Setar. We were very unfortunate because we would not be
commissioned together with them. The previous intakes (TJP36 backward),
all air force cadets were commissioned together with their intake before going
for their flying training. Our batch were very unfortunate!. What could we do,
this is a new policy from MINDEF.
49. Therefore, we (about 30 of us) were ordered to pack up our kits whilst the rest of our comrades commenced their commissioning parade training and rehearsal. Tearful moments. After hardly 9 months went through all the hardship together, at the end part, we have to split. We do not know, when we will meet again. And truely, after more than 30 years, I never seen more than 75% of them.
50. We looked at the memorable parade square (padang pawai) beside the beautiful beach of Kem Segenting. Start from learning how to 'sedia', 'senang diri', 'kanan lurus', 'pandang depan', 'kanan pusing', 'kiri pusing', 'belakang pusing' 'cepat jalan', 'angkat kaki paras, hentak padat' and all kinds of drill commands until we completed the foot drills, weapon drills and sword drills. That parade square and the sand beach witnessed us being punished both day and night. Forward rolls, slide rolls (sometimes with FSMO), changes parade etc.
51. We (flight cadets) get into the 3 tonner accompanied by SSjn Rahman (we called him Staf Rimau) to Seremban Railway Station. We travelled to Alor Setar by train. Staf Rahman was very nice to us that day, totally different compared to the passed 9 months. Upon arriving infront of the Officers' Mess of Pusat Latihan Terbang (FTC), Kepala Batas Alor Setar, numbers of officers were 'hungrily' waiting for us. Staf Rahman 'looked wistfully' handed over the cadets to Lt M (U) Mohd Zain (Adjutant of FTC). That day (i couldn't remember the date - roughly about 1st or 2nd week of January 1981) before the shadow of Staff Rimau disappeared, our 'horrible and miserable' life as flight cadet began.
52.
Two weeks after reporting to No 1 FTC, again we received a new
order. Out of 30+ flight cadet, seven (including me) were selected to go for
rotary wings training in No 2 FTC, Kluang Air Base. Again we were split into
smaller group. But, 2 weeks in Alor Setar was a 'scaring nightmare'. The
'ragging' session which will last until the student were elevated to be a
senior was horrifying. What sort of routine life?. Daytime we were required to
attend ground school and afternoon games. After dinner we were required to
report to the bar (Officers' Mess). By 8pm, we must be back to the room for
study prep. At 10pm the seniors (Intake 36) will come to do the room
inspection.
53.
What was happening? What 'discipline and tidiness' we learned for
9 months in SPK was insufficient and couldn't fit the air force requirement.
SPK changed us from civi to soldier and military officer,
Pulatibang The clothes must be folded square and staked straight up.
The bed sheet must always well-stretched and square, blanket, pillow cover, the
shoes etc must be properly placed. If the seniors dissatisfied (off course they
will never get satisfied), you could see all sort of things flying over to the
ground. End up, everybody (by nature of espirit de corps) will be called and
ran down to the grass compound infront of our accomodation block. We were
punished (one to another type of punishment) for our mistakes until 2am.
Normally, toward the end, no clothes were left at our body. We were consider
very lucky, if at the end of the session we still had our drawer (military term
for underwear) left at ourbody. Most of the time, the last punishment was
'sea-hunt'. Do you know what is this? You carry the fire extinguisher (like the
brand of cod emulsion bottle- fisherman carrying codfish). But naked.
'King
Cobra' Competition
54.
What is 'King Cobra???? Haaaaah.... satu malam, kami semua
dikumpulkan dalam bilik audio visual, dalam mes Pegawai. Masa tu, semua cuma
berbalut kain cadar putih sahaja.
55.
My tour in No 1 FTC, RMAF Alor Setar was very short. It was about
3 weeks for Basic Ground School. However, my 3 weeks in AS was full with red
dotted. I couldn't imagine if the present RMAF cadet officers were entertained
like that. Among the instructors in 1FTC at that time were Mej Lau Kong
Cheng (Brig Jen (B) Dato' ), Mej Abu Hashim (Brig Jen (B) Dato'), Kapt
Marsaleh (Mej Jen (B) Dato'), Kapt Hatta Mahmud (Lt Kol (B), Kapt Jaafar Kasim (Brig Jen (B) Dato'), Kapt
Zulkarnain, Kapt Azahari (retired) , Kapt Azahari, and Kapt Alang Zari Ishak
(Kapt (B), Dato')..... I also remember that our former PTU (Jen Tan Sri Roslan
Saad) was only Lt, doing his QFI Course. Our commandant was Kol (U) Ahmad
Merican (retired Mej Jen Datuk- allahyarham) and the CI was Lt Kol Parameswaran
(retired Brig Jen Dato').
56. Among my super seniors in 1FTC; from Intake TJP 35 were Nazarudin (Naza- later became my good friend), Rajasingam, Omar Baki, Haja Najmuddin, Suhaimi Shahid (allahyarham), Chia C K (mendiang). Suhaimi killed in PC7 crashed and Chia was killed in Caribou crashed. Among my seniors from intake SSC 36 were Ahmad Rusli, Affendi (died in Bulldog air crashed), Mayil, Hasnol, Chew, Roshaimi (Mej Jen Dato'), Bakar Hassan, Othman Taib, Aziz Achok (allahyarham), Din Fikri, Faizal Ooi, Suhaimi Kadir, Dzulkarnain Ahmad (Mej Jen Dato'), Ng, Khamis Kamal (ex-army) etc.
57.
One day (after two weeks in 1 FTC), myself and another 5 flight cadets
were called by our Adjutant and we were told that 6 of us were selected to go
for helicopter flying training at No 2 FTC in RMAF Kluang. Coincidently, 5
out of 6 candidates were Johorean.
PK

58. So, we were asked to get prepared to travel to Kluang (by train). We had about 2 weeks leave before reporting to another 'tiger cage' at RMAF Kluang.
59. The life in RMAF Kluang was not as worst as in AS, but the torturing part was the number of our seniors were double to us. Further more, we were officer cadets and they were commissioned officers.
60. This was one of the disadvantages of being 'cadet' as a student in Pulatibang. Our status was between the non-commissioned officer and an officer. No special mess for us, we have to stay in the officer mess (above our entitlement). In RMC there are Officer Cadet Mess and Officers Mess separately. The result was- we were bullied and 'gullibled' by the officers- once get out from our room and you saw our fellow seniors- straight away press up- did not wait for the instruction. We were surrounded by various category of seniors. The instructors, senior students (Alouette), super senior students (Nuri), non-flying staff officers, especially ATC officers. Perggh, miserable life of lousy officer cadets.
61. Who is the brilliant officer who proposed the new policy of flying cadets? He (surely he) should be fried.
62.
Those who I could remember were LtM(U) Hassan Zahari - course
leader for senior intake - majority SSC36 (Hassan is the son of Datuk Zahari
Zabidi -formerly an actor cum film producer) Hassan married to anak 'Mat
Salleh' (he left as a Kapt and flying with Sultan Johor's company) Hassan
was such a nice senior- last I met him when I was serving in
TUDM Kuantan 1983 and he was with 10 Sqn before they moved to KL Base. Hassan
was very nice senior and treated us very well- he is now working as a
pilot in Westar Aviation ).
63. LtM(U) Muhammad Abdul Latif bin Endut (later chopped from the course but did well in business and got his Datukship. I met him once in 2003 when I was working in Treasury - he served as a Private Secretary to Datuk Hishamuddin Hussein. The other seniors were Lt M(U) Mohd Akhtar Zainudin (he is from SSC34, retired Kolonel TUDM in 2006- and now Dato'), Lt M Rosni Aziz (he was ex-Army officer - now Brig Jen (R) Dato' seconded to APMM), Lt M(U) Idris Yusof (allahyarham, left the RMAF as Kapten and he died in road accident 2009), Lt M(U) Sugudev Dass (he died in Kuching 1982- suffered from ragging), Lt M(U) Jaafar Hassan (left as Kapten- he was together with Sugudev reported to Kuching in 1982), Lt M(U) Ridzuan Ahmad Tajuddin (allahyarham, left as Kapten and died in 2013 at Kuching), LtM(U) Ong Ong (chopped from the course- converted to Muslim and chnaged the name to Muhammad Muzammir Ong- now Brig Jen TUDM, Dato'), Lt M(U) Sulaiman Idris (chopped- joined Logistic- he left as Kapten), Lt M(U) Mohd Noh Nordin (chopped- joined Engineering and retired as Lt Kol TUDM). Mohd Noh was together with me in Course 28/99 in MTAT Haigate, and Lt M(U) Roslan (left as Kapten).
my senior course
64. My intake also had super senior flying
batch from intake TJP 35. Only 5 of them, they were Lt Prabhakaran Nair (intake
27- retired Lt Kol), Lt M(U) Yusoff Shariff, Lt M(U) Koh anak Ajap, Lt M(U)
James Tingom (he died in air crashed at Gunung Korbu), Lt M(U) Merejok anak
Nueng (later converted to Muslim became Mohd Merejok- left as Kapt and he died
in air crashed in Sarawak) and Lt M(U) Roslan Bujang. Other than Prabhakaran
and Yusof, the rest are Sarawakian. They were doing Nuri Conversion (OCU) Training.
65. After completed our Ground School, we
were assigned with our personal flying instructor; Rahman and I were assigned
to Kapt (U) Syed Busri Tengku Bujang, Lokman Abd Rahman with Kapt (U) Nasrun
Omar, Kamaruzzaman Wagiman with Kapt (U) Adnan Ibrahim, Ravintheeran with Kapt
Abd Ghaffar Abd Rahman, and Selvaraj with Kapt Nordin Kasim. We flew Bell
47G5-A helicopter.
66. And, the life of future RMAF helicopter pilot began.
Bell 47G5A
67.
The practical flying started with doing the pre-flight check on
aircraft. Students have to memorize the check list. Check the engine, fuel
tank, all the piping, main and tail rotor blade and the cabling etc.
68. Next, will be reporting to the Control Tower. LATIH 125 (trainee callsign)... POB bla bla bla... request start up over. Control Tower will answer and give the location, weather, wind and etc. Hahaha, this was my weakest point. The AT Controller spoke English very fast. We have to repeat whatever transpired to us.. but.. managed to catch 40% only.

69.
First day flying session- one hour ride was just an introduction.
Everything shown by the instructor. I just listen and observe.
Woooooooooohhhh.... My dream to be a pilot was coming nearer.
70. My second day also looked well, morale still at high level but my third day onward was not as what expected. The situation changed. Syed Busri started showing his colour. Every single mistake will be followed by curse and shout. All the vulgar words came out. His favourite words were 'puki and fuck you'. Punching, pinching and hitting. Everytime I landed from my sorty, some parts of my body were swollen, and painful, sometimes wounded- especially my left chin (being punched) and my lips (hit by the bondome microphone). When he punch at my chin sometimes he banged on my mic and the mic hit my lips of course it would cause bleeding. Torturing life of flying student. What I can do, that's my own option.

71. I also experienced flying with other instructor such as Kapt Abd Ghaffar Abd Rahman (personal instructor to Ravee), Kapt Adnan Ibrahim (personal instructor to Lokman) and Kapt Nordin Kassim (Selva's instructor). Ghaffar just slightly lower 'weight' than Syed Busri. He and Syed Busri got different hobby. He liked to pinch at my waist (when I did mistake or he did not happy with my performance). Since the instructor sat on my left, so my left waist would become a victim. After each sorty, I found that my waist swollen (became reddish or purplish) and very painful (pedih). Nordin was also nice instructor. Adnan and Nordin never man-handled their students. Adnan was totally different compared to most of the instructor. He was very nice and cool. Never raised his voice and had full control of his temperature. If i did a mistake he will laugh or smile at me (even sometimes looked cynical smile. But I got him at the later stage when I already at the lowest morale to fly.
72. From one day to another, I was getting weaker and losing my morale and spirit to continue my flying. My inspiration to be a pilot was deteriorating. Eventhough I knew that everybody (flying trainees) faced that kind of suffering experience and took it as part of the life of future pilot. I felt so bad, so deprived and so depressed because my other comrades did not faced as bad as I was. They got better and nicer instructor.
73. All those things were demoralized and demotivated me and also made me lost my confidence and interest to fly. I could not focus my flying any more. My performance was getting worse from day to another. Every night was a nightmare because the next day was not a day that I did not like to face.
74. After crossing the hours where I supposed to go for my solo flying, I did not qualify. I was given extra hours in order to help me to improve my flying. I was given a chance to fly with another instructor, Kapt Adnan Ibrahim. He was the softest among them. Never raise his voice, never touch the student and never use any vulgar words. But it was too late. I already lost my interest. When I was in the air, I became blank.
75. Finally I was flying with the OC Basic School, Mej Musa Hassan. That was the procedure, the POOR student will be handed over to OC for final evaluation before further action to be taken. BUT as what I said before, It was too late. Looking to all my counterparts had been doing solo flying, my determination to go further was deteriorated. Until today, I do not blame my instructor as a cause of my failure. The had done their job well to make me a pilot. But, I know that I was not born to be PILOT. So, I should blame myself for not enough efforts and commitment.

76.
Finally, they officially chopped me from the flying training.
After being interviewed by the 'Board' I opted to change to Supply Branch. They
attached me at Supply Wing under Mej Mohamed Hussein (OC Supply). And, sometime
in Oct 1981, I was selected to attend a short Air Movement course at Kinrara.
Upon completion my a month course, I was posted to RMAF Kuching.
77.
I was commissioned on 1 July 1981, and the commissioning ceremony
happened in the RMAF Kluang Commandant's office. The Commandant was on
course, so the rank was put on my shoulder by the CI (acting Comdt), Mej (U)
Abdul Razak Abdul Aziz (retired Mej Jen Dato').
78.
Among the new 'term' we learned in FTC was MAE WEST. Mary Jane 'Mae' West (1893-1980) was an American actress, singer, playwright, screenwriter and
sex symbol whose entertainment career spanned seven decades. What is Mae West
which I learned in FTC?. Mae West is a term used for life jackets used by the
air crew in emergency crashed into the water. What is the relationship between
these two Mae West? You are free to guess.
79. Just to recall some memories. Among the officers in RMAF Kluang who I could still remember were:
Lt

Mej(U)
Abd Razak Abd Aziz (CI- retired Mej Jen Datuk);
Mej(U)
Lim Aik Peng (OC OCU Nuri);

Karim Abdul (retired Mej Jen Dato);
Kapt
Hashim Darus (retired Mej);
Kapt
Wee Ho Chong (retired);
the
Base Adjutant was Kapt Ainuddin (retired Kapt joined Sime Darby and died in 2014)
80. The SEATCO was Mej Chin Yoon Sem, later replaced by Mej Quek Su Chye (retired Lt Kol). Other ATC officers were Lt(U) Tarmizi Yom (retired Lt Kol), Lt(U) Mustapha (retired Kol), Lt M(U) Khairul Kamal (retired Lt Kol) and Lt M(U) Jegathesan. I met again Mej Quek SC in RMAF Kuantan (1985/86) and he was mu my neighnur in OMQ. I met again Mej Chin YS in ITU Kinrara in 1991. He was my Chief Instructor for SOC.
81.
These officers were also in Kluang for their OCU Alouette course; namely
Lt Abd Razak Ahmad (now Brig Jen Dato'). Lt Mohd Ariff (left Kapt) and Lt(U)
Park Thin Tart (armed forces football player).
82.
Mej (U) Musa Hassan (my OC Basic) was very nice person. His wife (Kak
Dalila) also nice lady. His small daughter 'Farah' was so chomel......,
I first met Mej(U) Musa in 1979 when I attended my Cadet interview
at Majidee Camp. He was one of the SO2 in Tenaga Kerja 'C' at that time. I
could not remember when he left the service, but in the rank of Major. He
joined private flying firm. I met him (after his retirement) once in LIMA in
early 2000. Sadly, I heard that he already divorced with Kak Dalila.
83. I would like to recall one joke (unintentionally) made by Mej(U) Musa. This joke is related to our flying training. In Bell helicopter, the cyclic control stick was very very sensitive. For the new students who were rough in handling the system. Just slight touch to the stick would effect the aircraft moving forward or became unstable. So,we must handle it softly or gently.
84. One day I flew with Mejar(U) Musa me. As one of the poor trainer, I felt so difficult to handle the cyclic stick nicely (during hovering), so the aircraft could not stay hovering in stable, mean moving or yawing. So he (Musa) ask me "Apa ni Toha, hover ke apa ni, goyang sana sini?". I kept quiet, trying hard to control. Still shivering. I laughed in my heart. In my mind, ni dah last chance, fly with the OC, kalau dah tak boleh jugak, memang tak boleh terbang la nampaknya
84. Again, talk about the losing in the life of flight cadets. In 1981, the basic salary of 2nd Lt was RM700-750. For the flying students you add another RM150 flying allowance. The allowance of the senior officer cadets was RM450 (extra RM50 frm SPK). No allowance on top of allowance. So flight cadets were not entitled for flying allowance. And the length of flying training took up about 12 to 24 months - the syllabus depend on the flying hours - the flying hours depend on the serviceability of aircraft and also weather condition. Lucky those years the serviceability of RMAF aircraft was quiet lucrative. The less aircraft serviceable or the longer raining season the longer period of the flying course.
86.
The longer the flying course, the longer we have to wait for our first
pip (2nd Lt). Just imagine, if the flying training took 18 months.
Calculate: [(750-450) + 150] x 18 = you lost RM8100. In 1981/82 the value
of RM8100 is like RM81000 today. I remember, at that time, you can buy a
terrace house for RM12000 and the cost of the same type of house today (2010) can
reach RM120,000.
87.
Sir, thank you for 'chopping' me from the flying school at the earliest
point. The longer I stay in flying school, the more lost (of benefits) will be accumulated.
Since I was not born to be a flyer.
